▼Today I’m bringing you a review of Mechanic Toys’ new release — a small-scale Broadside. I remember the official promo images for this Broadside were released about half a year ago, and after a long period of refinement, it’s finally shipping. Looking across the entire market, Broadside figures are quite rare, and the character itself has never been particularly popular. This small-scale version by Mechanic Toys largely fills the gap for Broadside in the toy lineup. So how does the figure perform? Let’s take a closer look in this review.
Broadside is one of the more inconsistently portrayed characters in the G1 cartoon, with two different versions of his appearance. The one I’m reviewing today is the red-face version that appeared in the earlier episodes of the animation.
The packaging is in line with Mechanic Toys’ usual style, featuring Broadside’s robot mode artwork in the center of the front and the Mechanic Toys logo in the lower left corner. The back of the box showcases the three modes of the toy — we’ll skip that for now.

▼Contents include the Broadside figure, battle axe, large gun, twin cannons, character card, and instruction manual. I got the bonus version, which also comes with a set of Aerialbots mini-planes.

▼This Broadside from Mechanic Toys is based on the G1 design but has been aesthetically enhanced — after all, the original look was not exactly appealing. The redesigned head sculpt is consistent with the style of other G1 characters and adds some biomechanical elements. The paint quality is also spot-on, with no obvious missing or sloppy applications.

▼This red-face Broadside doesn’t have a lot of paint apps, but the toy faithfully reproduces the design while adding lots of mechanical detailing on the armor. His feet have jet thruster-style molds, which are different from the later blue-face version, and this toy does a great job distinguishing between the two.

▼The backpack folds up nicely, with the folded carrier deck forming small wings. The included twin cannons plug into the wings, also accurate to the design.
![]()
▼The head can rotate and tilt slightly up and down. The arms can rotate vertically and lift outward well past 90 degrees. The upper arms can rotate, elbows can bend 180 degrees, and the hands have four fingers that open together.
![]()
▼The waist can rotate and bend slightly forward. The legs can kick forward and backward about 90 degrees, and sideways slightly more than 90 degrees. Thighs can rotate, knees bend close to 90 degrees. The ankles rotate and tilt inward for ground contact, and the front feet can point downward. For a figure in the general "classic" line, Broadside’s articulation is quite good and can easily strike standard poses.
![]()
▼Broadside’s weapons include an axe and a large gun. The large gun is a standard for G1 characters, but I don’t remember Broadside using an axe in the cartoon. Given his robot mode is at least as bulky as Jetfire’s, it’s reasonable for him to wield a weapon that conveys power.
![]()
▼As a Triple Changer, Broadside’s transformation design isn’t difficult. Transforming into either vehicle mode is about on par with Hasbro’s official Deluxe to Voyager class toys — easy to memorize after doing it once or twice. The aircraft carrier mode has a high degree of completion, with well-rendered details from the deck to the command tower. Real-world carriers have thick hulls, so it’s understandable that the toy also looks bulky.
![]()
▼The biggest highlight of the carrier mode is its compatibility with the bonus Aerialbots. Placing the mini planes on the carrier deck gives a clear sense of scale. Broadside in robot mode is only about half a torso taller than normal Transformers, but in carrier mode, he’s nearly base-bot sized. The transformation scale is wildly inconsistent — but hey, that’s Cybertronian compression technology for you.
![]()
▼The jet mode features a fairly large cockpit — it’s at least transport-plane-sized. The red and blue paint on the wings is very striking and enhances the visual appeal of the mode. The landing gear is also fully molded — for a Triple Changer, none of the modes feel like an afterthought.
![]()
▼To summarize: Broadside is already a rarely-made character, and red-face Broadside toys are few enough to count on one hand. So this version from Mechanic Toys really fills a long-standing gap. The toy improves upon an otherwise wild G1 design, making it easier for us to accept. The joint tolerances are very well-tuned, making it a joy to handle. The transformation isn’t hard, and both alt modes are executed to a high standard. All in all, it’s a highly recommended figure.
