Today I’m bringing you DX9’s new MP-scale Sideswipe 3.0 version. This Sideswipe mold from DX9 has previously been released in a G1 color version (1.0) and an animation color version (2.0). After one year, the 3.0 version is about to be released. I previously gave a high evaluation of this Sideswipe mold, including its repainted versions. How does the 3.0 version perform this time? Let’s find out in this review.
▼Since the one I have is still an early sample piece, there is no official packaging, instruction manual, or character card. These will be included in the final production version. Also because this is an early sample, there will be some differences in workmanship compared to the final product, such as paint overflow or paint chipping—these can be ignored. The main focus is the overall effect of the toy. The contents include the Sideswipe figure, shoulder cannon, large gun, and dual pickaxes. Because mine is a sample, the rearview mirror parts on the car were not installed; they will definitely be included in the final version.

▼Compared to the square face of the animation model, DX9’s Sideswipe head sculpt is slimmer and more human-like. On mine, there is some paint chipping on the right eyelid. As mentioned earlier, this is an early sample, so it can be ignored.

▼The earliest 1.0 Sideswipe from DX9 used blue-purple colors on the arms to match the design sheet, which was one of the main criticisms of that version. The later 2.0 version mainly restored the animation color scheme, changing the blue-purple arm parts to white, the blue headlights to silver, and the metal parts on the front feet to white paint. The 3.0 version is a fine-tuned paint upgrade based on 2.0, with little difference on the front of the figure overall.

▼The main improvement of Sideswipe 3.0, aside from some mold adjustments, is the richer paintwork on the vehicle mode. This can be seen from the armor parts on the back of Sideswipe in robot mode. The 1.0 and 2.0 versions had almost no paint separation on the back of the lower legs, while the 3.0 version adds a lot of black line detailing, which indeed improves the visual effect.

▼Sideswipe’s head can rotate and slightly tilt upward. The arms can rotate vertically and lift about 90 degrees. The upper arms can rotate, and the elbows bend well over 90 degrees. The wrists can rotate. The thumb has one ball joint and one directional joint, while the other fingers are connected in a single unit with two directional joints. The waist can rotate and bend forward about 90 degrees. The legs can kick forward and sideways about 90 degrees, and backward about 45 degrees. The thighs can rotate, and the knees bend slightly over 90 degrees. The feet can plant forward, backward, and inward, and the front feet can also rotate. As a transforming toy, this Sideswipe has no obvious weaknesses in articulation, and posing is not a problem.

▼According to the design, Sideswipe’s shoulder cannon should be mounted on the left shoulder. The peg design of the toy also only allows it to be inserted on the left shoulder, not the right. The shoulder cannon can also be held in hand, with a handle slot that fits the left hand.
The standard white gun is also included, with a handle slot that fits the right hand. In other words, if you want, you can equip Sideswipe with dual guns.

▼The impact drill and impact hammer accessories, which appeared less frequently in the animation, are also included. These were already present in the 1.0 Sideswipe release. To install them, you need to remove the hands first.

▼DX9’s Sideswipe combines the impact drill and impact hammer through a handle, creating a new pair of pickaxe-like melee weapons. The handle can also be extended, allowing users to adjust it as needed.

▼Although this is an MP-targeted product, DX9’s Sideswipe transformation is not difficult. After transforming it two or three times, you can basically remember the steps. The vehicle shell is relatively complete, and the seams are within an acceptable range. The 3.0 version removes the inner windshield tab, preventing breakage while not affecting the appearance.

▼The tires use rubber material, allowing smooth rolling. The 3.0 version also adds black paint details near the door handles, in front of the rear wing, and on the rear exhaust grille, improving the visual effect compared to the previous two versions. The rear wing also removes the previous tabs found in earlier versions, making it more complete and natural while not affecting robot mode tightness.

▼The pop-up headlights are separate parts and can be manually opened. I remember the 1.0 sample had very tight headlights, while later G2 versions and this 3.0 version have more normal tightness.

▼I usually don’t pay much attention to whether the vehicle underside is well-hidden or realistic, but DX9’s underside is very neatly organized. All transformation parts are properly stored underneath, with no obvious robot parts exposed.

▼DX9’s Sideswipe already had a high level of completion in previous versions. Both modes performed well, transformation was simple and clever, and accessories were fully included. The 3.0 upgrade mainly improves mold details and paintwork, removes some unnecessary tabs that affected appearance, and increases vehicle-mode paint detailing. If you haven’t bought previous versions of this Sideswipe, this one is definitely safe to get. As the mold continues to improve, I wonder if future metallic or battle-damaged versions will be released—something to look forward to.
