Today I’m bringing you a brand-new release from Gear Factory: BOLT Skyquake. For convenience, I’ll refer to this figure as “Dreadwing” for the rest of the review. After such a long wait, Gear Factory has finally launched their next new product. As a project refined over nearly a year, how does the figure perform? Let’s follow the review and find out.
▼The packaging style is noticeably different from the manufacturer’s previous products. The center of the box depicts a scene of Gear Factory attacking a blast shield, with the Dreadwing portion rendered in an embossed finish. The back of the box mainly showcases 2D-style line art of Dreadwing.
![Gear Factory Gale TFP AM-22 Dreadwing red and gray robot humanoid Gear Factory Gale TFP AM-22 Dreadwing red and gray robot humanoid]()
▼The inner packaging still uses EVA foam. I’ve said countless times that this foam material offers far better protection than standard blister or paper packaging. During shipping or storage, even if subjected to pressure or drops, the figure is much less likely to be damaged. Of course, this foam definitely costs more than blister or paper packaging, but the manufacturer continues to use it anyway. It’s not a huge thing, but it really shows their attitude.
![Gear Factory Gale TFP AM-22 Dreadwing robot in action pose Gear Factory Gale TFP AM-22 Dreadwing robot in action pose]()
▼The contents include the Dreadwing main figure, a cannon that can convert into a detachable greatsword, a non-transforming greatsword, two bombs, a flip phone, and two replacement heads. Compared to the original size, the Gear Factory Dreadwing is enlarged by about two centimeters. I’ve been told that this Dreadwing still uses modified ABS material. I don’t really understand ABS material science, but from handling it, the strength and toughness are definitely not an issue.
The figure is mainly molded in color, with the color tuned to have a strong metallic feel. On this basis, a large amount of paint has been added that the original did not have. Mold flow marks are indeed quite noticeable, but I don’t really mind that. Compared to whether there are flow marks or not, I care more about how accurate the paint application is.
![Gear Factory Gale TFP AM-22 Dreadwing robot transformation aircraft Gear Factory Gale TFP AM-22 Dreadwing robot transformation aircraft]()
▼The default head sculpt of Dreadwing is basically the same as the original. The eyes use red transparent parts, and the edges of the helmet have been chamfered, so there’s no need to worry about them being sharp.
![Gear Factory Gale TFP AM-22 Dreadwing jet fighter transformation mode Gear Factory Gale TFP AM-22 Dreadwing jet fighter transformation mode]()
▼The two replacement head sculpts recreate the sinister grin and angry expressions from the concept art, and can be swapped directly via a plug-in connection.
![Gear Factory Gale TFP AM-22 Dreadwing robot articulated full display Gear Factory Gale TFP AM-22 Dreadwing robot articulated full display]()
▼The cockpit area on the chest has been changed to black. According to the animation, this area should be silver in robot mode but black in vehicle mode. Gear Factory has unified it as black this time. There’s really no way around this—after all, if you wanted the same part to be different colors before and after transformation, you’d probably have to wait decades to see some kind of insanely advanced material appear.
![]()
▼This Dreadwing features over 50% retooling compared to the original mold, with much of it concentrated in the lower body. The skirt armor has been redesigned with a new transformation structure, directly fixing the original “split crotch” issue. The knee armor has been changed from soft plastic to hard plastic, an extra toe has been added to the outside of the foot, and the wing positions have been optimized to better match the animation design.
![]()
▼Dreadwing itself has a backpack. Through the stacking of multiple layers of wings, the figure achieves a strong sense of depth. The hollow areas caused by plastic saving in the thighs have been filled in, and the cavities at the back of the lower legs created by transformation have been specifically covered with panels.
![]()
▼The head can rotate side to side and tilt upward slightly. The arms can lift forward well beyond 90 degrees, lift sideways to about 90 degrees, and lift backward with some interference from the wings. The upper arms can rotate, and the elbows can bend slightly beyond 90 degrees. The wrists can rotate, and the four fingers have been given an additional hinged joint, allowing them to spread outward.
The legs can kick forward and sideways to just under 90 degrees, and backward to about 90 degrees. The thighs can rotate, the knees can bend to under 90 degrees, and the front foot and inner toe have been given inward-tilting ankle joints, making poses look more natural.
![]()
▼Dreadwing’s cannon has extremely high accuracy. The silver-gray texture of the gun body is excellent, and the iconic blade has also been recreated. It can be held by hand via two grips. It would have been even better if some red paint had been added to the hollowed-out muzzle area.
![]()
▼The blade and rear handle on the cannon can be removed and transformed into Dreadwing’s classic greatsword. As a transforming weapon, the overall completion level is acceptable. The manufacturer also included a non-transforming greatsword. Since it doesn’t involve any transformation structure, this sword is more accurate in shape and has a longer blade. Combined with the transforming sword, a dual-wielding pose is also possible.
![]()
▼These bombs are Dreadwing’s classic accessories, appearing very frequently in the animation. This time, the manufacturer directly included two, which can be held in the hands thanks to the articulated fingers.
![]()
▼This flip-phone-like device is also one of Dreadwing’s commonly used tools. It can handle multiple functions such as detonating bombs and transmitting coordinates. It’s quite thoughtful that the manufacturer remembered to include this.
I’ve always believed that accessories are just as important as the main figure design. Good accessories can raise the overall ceiling of a toy, while sloppy accessories lower the baseline. Many Dreadwing figures have swords and cannons that are poorly done—not even talking about accuracy, they’re all too short, too small, and stingy, making the figure look awkward when holding them. The size of the accessories on this Dreadwing is what they should be. Only when the size and workmanship of the accessories match the main figure can they truly enhance the toy.
![]()
▼Gear Factory added a pair of new ports on the wings. All of the aforementioned weapon accessories can be stored on the wings or in the cavities on the back of the figure. Players can choose the mounting positions according to their own needs.
![]()
▼Dreadwing’s transformation process is not difficult. After transforming it once or twice, you can basically remember the general steps, thanks to the excellent design of the original mold. The overall aircraft mode is very complete, and the metallic gold texture is amplified in this form. The soft plastic parts on the nose and canards of the original have been changed to hard plastic, which is honestly unnecessary for us adult collectors. The cockpit has been changed to black, and the hollow areas on the underside of the fuselage have been filled in, making the vehicle look more compact.
![]()
▼In robot mode, Dreadwing’s legs are stored near the rear of the aircraft, and in the animation the vehicle mode does indeed expose some leg structure. The landing gear has been changed to rolling wheels, the exhaust nozzles at the rear have been slightly enlarged, and more line details have been added. On the original, the hands were simply placed at the rear without any treatment. Gear Factory added a storage transformation here, and this retool is actually quite crucial—no one wants a pair of human hands sticking out of the tail of a jet and breaking the illusion, right, Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen Voyager Class Starscream?
![]()
▼The new weapon hardpoints on the wings allow the two bombs and the“flip phone” to be perfectly stored under the wings in vehicle mode. The cannon and greatsword can be mounted on top of the fuselage. Personally, I think this is rather unnecessary, since having such large objects mounted on top of an aircraft is quite unrealistic. Consider this feature a bonus and that’s it.
![]()
▼This time, Gear Factory’s Dreadwing can be said to have solved all the pain points of the original. The figure looks great, the retooling is extensive, and the overall accuracy has been greatly improved compared to the original toy. At the same time, because the aesthetics and accuracy are so well done, the articulation in the lower body is slightly weaker. The accessories almost cover all of TFP Dreadwing’s weapons, essentially providing everything in one go. This Dreadwing is currently the highest overall quality TFP Dreadwing on the market. It can be considered a definitive version, and it certainly lives up to the long wait from fans. If you’re interested, it’s definitely worth considering—this Dreadwing comes highly recommended by me.

Gear Factory TFP Dreadwing "Ten Winds" Review: The Game of Balancing Screen Accuracy and Articulation Trade-offs
I. Product Positioning and Scale
In the Transformers collecting circle, the *Transformers: Prime* (TFP) series has always occupied an important position due to its unique aesthetic design. The Leader Class Dreadwing named "Ten Winds" recently launched by Gear Factory is precisely a deep tribute and refinement targeting this core character of the series. From a positioning perspective, this product aims to fill the regrets regarding volume and details of the official original mold. ▼
![]()
![]()
The head height of "Ten Winds" reaches 18cm. Compared to the early official V-Class mold, its height has an increase of about 2cm. This optimization in body size makes the proportions appear more coordinated and imposing when placed together with the current APC series, the official Legacy series, and the classic Second Edition Optimus Prime. As a third-party work developed for the TFP collection system, it precisely hits the needs of those players pursuing animation accuracy and display effects.
II. Material Feel and Paint Performance
The first feeling upon handling is "solid". Gear Factory has been quite generous in material selection; the plastic material is thick and tough, and a distinct sense of weight can be felt when playing, rather than a cheap thinness. The whole machine adopts a dark blue molding color, deep and textured. Although slight water marks can still be observed on some large flat surfaces, they are within an acceptable range. ▼
![]()
In terms of painting, the embellishment of gold and silver metallic paint can be called the finishing touch. Especially the metallic paint spraying on the chest, wing edges, and face is uniform and bright in color, greatly enhancing the visual premium feel of the product. The sprue mark processing technology also reflects the manufacturer's care; the vast majority of sprue marks are hidden inside the structure or in inconspicuous positions, and the edges are processed to be rounded and blunt, which ensures the sharpness of the shape while taking into account the comfort during play. The damping of joints everywhere is tuned just right, neither too tight causing stress marks, nor appearing "floppy" due to being too loose.
III. Head Sculpt Details and Retooling Highlights
The head sculpt is the proudest part of this "Ten Winds". The designer not only retained the light-piping design for the eyes but also generously included three replacement faces with different expressions, allowing players to recreate Dreadwing's calm, angry, or majestic states in the show. The neck adopts an ingenious double-segment joint design, which enables the head to achieve significant looking-up and looking-down movements. For a character whose vehicle mode is a fighter jet, this ability to look up significantly is crucial for recreating flight postures. ▼
![]()
In terms of body structure, the retooling of the calf part is the most sincere. It completely fills the hollow gaps of the original mold that were criticized, and through added cover plates and refined lines, makes the leg shape closer to the animation setting. What makes accuracy enthusiasts even happier is that the number of toes also strictly follows the animation prototype and has been perfectly recreated; this dedication to detail allows the visual integrity of the whole machine in robot mode to reach an extremely high level.
IV. Deep Analysis of Articulation
Speaking of articulation, this product presents a clear phenomenon of being "unbalanced". The upper limb performance is very eye-catching: the shoulder armor is designed with a linkage avoidance mechanism, which can move back and forth significantly and will not interfere with the arm's lateral raising movement at all; a rotation joint has been added to the wrist part, and finger articulation design has been added, which provides more natural expressiveness for the character holding a gun or gripping a sword. ▼
![]()
However, the waist design has become the biggest fatal wound of this product. Limited by the priority of transformation structure and shape accuracy, the waist is completely immovable, which greatly limits the tension of human dynamics, appearing somewhat stretched when posing for some waist-twisting power poses. There are also regrets in the lower limbs; the range of motion for the hips and knees is less than 90 degrees, which makes it difficult for "Ten Winds" to achieve deep squats or high-difficulty kicking movements. Fortunately, the grounding design is relatively solid, and combined with stable joint damping, it can still demonstrate a very strong aura when performing conventional static standing poses. ▼
![]()
V. Accessory Lineup and Interlocking Play
The richness of accessories is a major selling point of "Ten Winds", covering almost all of Dreadwing's iconic equipment in the show. The biggest surprise for fans is none other than that miniature flip phone accessory paying tribute to the plot, as well as the exquisite dart bomb; these small items greatly enhance the fun of playing. The silver long sword has a slender shape and is designed with an ingenious storage logic; whether it is mounted on the back in robot mode or on the wing in vehicle mode, perfect storage can be achieved. ▼
![]()
The iconic Gatling cannon naturally will not be absent; the handle part supports adjustment, and combined with the articulated hands, it can achieve various holding postures, and one can even try dual-wielding combination play. When all accessories are mounted on the main body, that heavy armed thickness comes rushing to the face, perfectly interpreting Dreadwing's image as a Decepticon elite warrior.
VI. Transformation Logic and Vehicle Mode
The transformation logic of "Ten Winds" has been refined and optimized based on the original V-Class mold. The transformation process is not complicated but is full of logical beauty. Thanks to the improvement in mold precision, in vehicle mode, the tab connections between various parts perform "seamlessly", with extremely high tightness, and there are absolutely no issues of looseness or excessive gaps. ▼
![]()
The overall sense in aircraft mode is extremely strong, the fuselage lines are smooth, perfectly recreating that fictional fighter jet full of power in the animation. The manufacturer designed three retractable landing gears at the bottom of the fuselage, and the thruster details have also been engraved. What is even more commendable is that the vehicle mode still supports perfect mounting of all weapons; the cannon and long sword can be firmly assembled under the wings, showing a posture of firing with full power. ▼

![]()
VII. Comprehensive Evaluation and Suggestions
Taken together, this TFP Dreadwing "Ten Winds" launched by Gear Factory is a work with extremely distinct advantages and disadvantages. Its core selling points lie in top-tier appearance, solid material feel, and a sincere amount of accessories. Although the immovability of the waist and the limitations of the lower limb range of motion make it slightly regrettable in the "playability" dimension, its outstanding face sculpt accuracy and solid integrity are enough to make up for these shortcomings. ▼
![]()
This is a typical refined work that sacrifices extreme articulation in exchange for top-tier shape accuracy and a solid hand feel. For die-hard fans of the TFP series, or "static display collectors" pursuing perfect proportions, this is absolutely a masterpiece not to be missed on the current market. We look forward to the manufacturer attempting to further optimize the structure of the waist and lower limbs in future retools or new products without destroying the shape, bringing a more perfect experience to players.
