▼Today I’m bringing you a review of Magic Square’s recent reissue of the 1.0 Small Optimus Prime. It’s been five years since this version of Optimus Prime was first released, and as a classic mold, it also influenced the design of Magic Square’s later 2.0 Optimus Prime figures in both scales. Looking back at this classic mold in 2025, does it still offer a different experience? Let’s explore that through this review.
The packaging for this Optimus Prime is a horizontal box design. In addition to the standard artwork of Optimus Prime, the left side of the box features an alien from the G1 episode “The Secret of Planet Cybertron,” which I find a bit creepy. Compared to the original version, this reissue removed the transparent window from the packaging. The top right and bottom right corners of the box display Magic Square’s logo and the toy’s serial number, respectively.
The back of the box mainly displays line art of the toy, which we’ll skip over.

▼The contents include the Optimus Prime figure, trailer, Roller, large gun, Energon axe, five replacement hands, one replacement hand for Ultra Magnus, a trailer connector piece for Huffer, character card, and instruction manual. The smokestacks are stored separately in the box and need to be installed by the user. I remember the original release included two sets of different-length smokestacks for each mode, which had to be swapped during transformation. Later versions switched to the current design, which features extendable and retractable smokestacks. The proportions of this Optimus Prime clearly take cues from MP-10 and differ from the now-popular MP-44-style body.

▼The entire figure has a matte finish. The head sculpt is highly accurate, with a calm expression, and the silver accents on the helmet are well-painted with no obvious overspill. On my copy, there’s a bit of silver paint rubbed onto the visor area near the right eye—looks like I got unlucky.

▼As I mentioned earlier, this small-scale Optimus Prime—especially the torso—was clearly inspired by MP-10. The color scheme of this reissue has been adjusted to closely match the G1 cartoon, with the limbs molded in unpainted colored plastic.

▼The chest windows can be opened to reveal the Matrix of Leadership inside, a standard feature for G1 Optimus Prime figures. The Matrix design doesn’t really resemble the G1 version; the silver handles, in particular, look more like they’re from TFP, or even resemble the design from the 2025 Transformers One movie. Did the manufacturer predict the future?

▼The back of the figure is neat and tidy. Apart from the rear lights being stored in the backpack, there’s almost no extra kibble. You can easily guess how the cab transforms just by looking at the backpack—after all, MP-10’s transformation logic has influenced countless official and third-party products.

▼Optimus Prime’s head can swivel and tilt up and down. The arms can raise sideways about 60 degrees and rotate vertically. The upper arms can rotate, elbows bend close to 180 degrees, and the wrists rotate. The waist can swivel and tilt forward and backward. Legs can kick forward and backward about 60 degrees and sideways about 90 degrees. The thighs rotate, knees bend beyond 90 degrees. The feet can tilt inward, and the toes can bend downward. Despite being a five-year-old design, this Optimus Prime’s articulation is comparable to modern “Classics-style” toys. Only the sideways shoulder lift and front-back leg movement are somewhat limited—otherwise, everything else is fine.

▼Optimus Prime’s weapons include a large rifle and Energon axe. The rifle’s barrel is slightly thick, but still proportionate. The Energon axe is slimmer and more elongated than the G1 version, with a long blade section near the handle—likely meant to simulate a swinging afterimage effect.
![]()
▼Transformation isn’t difficult—follow the manual once and you’ll probably remember the steps. From today’s perspective, the alt mode feels a bit outdated. The most noticeable flaws are the missing side window and a somewhat bulky rear section. Other than that, the vehicle mode is mostly solid.

▼A major selling point of this small-scale Optimus Prime is that it comes with a full trailer and Roller. Optimus Prime just feels more complete when pulling a trailer, and the size and length of this one are well-matched to the figure. The signature blue-and-white stripe is faithfully reproduced.
![]()
▼The trailer’s rear gate can open to release a ramp, allowing Magic Square’s small-scale cars to drive up. I don’t have a car of the right scale on hand to demonstrate.
![]()
▼When Optimus Prime isn’t pulling the trailer, the trailer can stand on its own using fold-out support struts. The two thin front struts can be hard to pull out, but you can use the Energon axe to help—makes it much easier.
![]()
▼Like most G1 Prime trailers, this one can fully open, revealing a blue command cabin that turns into a battle platform. The radar and mechanical arm on the cabin can be raised for attack or repair poses.
![]()
▼To summarize: this reissue of Magic Square’s 1.0 small-scale Optimus Prime shows its age in many areas from today’s perspective. The design clearly draws inspiration from MP-10, which is now rare in a market dominated by MP-44 proportions. Still, the figure feels great in hand and isn’t difficult to transform, making it a good pick-up-and-play toy. It also offers excellent value—at a very affordable price, you get an Optimus Prime complete with trailer. If you’re looking for a fun, casual Optimus Prime figure, I highly recommend this one.
