Mastermind Creations Ocular Max PS-28 Demolitor Mixmaster Review

OX Mixmaster is an excellent toy with a very high level of design and build quality. The transformation process is full of highlights. Although it involves many steps, it remains very smooth overall. The toy uses numerous tabs that are well-designed and logically placed, allowing collectors to clearly feel when each step is properly locked into place. Rather than being a frustrating drawback during handling, this actually greatly enhances the overall play experience.
▼In terms of accuracy, neither of the two modes can be considered outstanding. However, they still capture Mixmaster’s defining characteristics well, with details pushed to the maximum. For example, the rotating mixing drum in vehicle mode can fold down into a backpack that sits flush against the torso in robot mode—an outstanding execution that stands out among similar toys.

▼As for OX’s much-touted no-accessory combination design, in practice Devastator is significantly easier than other “one large plus four small” combiners. On the one hand, Devastator only requires the head, chest armor, and forearms to combine integrally; on the other hand, the six-member configuration allows Long Haul and Hook to share much of the core combining complexity. Even low-cost Mechanical Invasion managed a no-accessory combination, and even FT’s Devastator no longer requires an additional large inner frame.

▼Therefore, I don’t think the integrated combination concept needs to be used to defend the shortcomings of the OX Constructicons. While this Mixmaster doesn’t have major flaws, issues still exist. As mentioned earlier, the accuracy is lacking; additionally, the robot-mode proportions are not ideal and affect the overall look, and in combined mode the thighs are too thin. Even with the armor panels deployed, they still appear slender and do not match well with Scrapper.

▼Even taking these flaws into account, I am still willing to place OX Devastator at the top among all currently known Devastators. The reason is simple: the play experience is truly outstanding. As for the rest, my ranking is OX > DST > FT > 01S. FT still suffers from great looks paired with overly troublesome transformations; 01S has no real strengths beyond sheer size. As for Company X—sorry, it remains on my blacklist. Ever since Menasor, I have had no desire to touch that third-party company’s products again.
DST Devastator was a moderate but pleasant surprise for me. Their Superion is currently priced quite high on the aftermarket, but the jet transformations are far too fragmented, making the experience very unpleasant. As a result, I had little expectation for DST Devastator. Unexpectedly, while retaining the mechanical feel and movie-style aesthetic of Superion, DST showed significant progress in design. Although it still involves many transformation steps, the sensible tabs and clear logic mean that handling it is no longer a painful experience. If DST can further improve their choice of materials, it would be even better.
All in all, after experiencing five different Constructicon teams, I didn’t hesitate to place a preorder for DST’s Bruticus.
