This reissue has an updated red paint finish, which is different from the previous version, and it also comes with a replacement head sculpt for the MP-10 version.

▼Today, we’re taking a look at the large-scale animation-colored Optimus Prime from Magic Square. The Magic Square 2.0 mold has been out for several years now and is considered a classic. It has been reissued in various versions, and this newly released version features premium paint in animation colors that closely replicate the G1 cartoon. How does the toy perform? Let’s find out in this review.
The toy comes in a large box, which displays exclusive artwork of this animation-colored Optimus Prime. The pose on Optimus Prime looks quite dynamic. The Magic Square logo is on the top left of the box, and the bottom right shows the product number: MS-02 Ultra.

The proportions of Magic Square 2.0 Optimus Prime are spot-on. With this premium painted version, nearly the entire figure is fully painted, giving it an overall feel of refinement.

▼The default head sculpt follows the MP44-style—with a longer face, giving it a more mature and G1-accurate appearance. If you’re not a fan of this style, Magic Square has also included an MP10-style alternate head that can be swapped by simply pulling it off. Which one do you prefer?

▼The chest windows are made of dark blue translucent plastic, through which you can see the Matrix of Leadership compartment inside. The abdominal bumper is chrome-plated, giving it a nice premium finish—expected from a toy with premium paint. On my unit, the right gray structure on the abdomen has a slight scuff mark—probably just bad luck.
Also on the rear side of the gray structure, there’s a small visible chunk from the backpack. This is one of the few excess parts on the figure, but it doesn’t impact the look much and is easy to overlook in most cases.

▼As expected from a Masterpiece-scale Optimus Prime, the chest opens to reveal the Matrix of Leadership. The entire storage chamber is filled with mechanical detailing and chrome parts. The Matrix is removable and will be shown later.

▼The smokestacks on the shoulders are chrome-plated. However, the sprue marks were handled roughly—on the left shoulder, the sprue is directly visible on the front side. Hopefully, this will be improved in future versions. The arms are completely G1 accurate, with no additional panel coloring.

▼The leg sculpt is elegant, flowing naturally from top to bottom without losing its sense of power. The red and white parts are detailed with armor panel lines. The side fuel tanks are chrome-plated, and the feet have die-cast parts added for better stability.

▼The backpack is clean and tidy. I believe it’s better handled than the ones on MP44 and SS86 Optimus Prime. The backpack here is slimmer and more accurate in shape. If only the rectangular roof panel could be shrunk a bit, it would be nearly perfect.

▼The head can rotate horizontally, tilt up at a wide angle, and tilt slightly to the side. Arms rotate vertically and raise sideways well beyond 90 degrees. Butterfly joints at the shoulders allow for front and back movement. Upper arms rotate horizontally, and the elbows can rotate and bend nearly 180 degrees. Wrists rotate and fold outward. The hands are fully articulated, with each finger independently movable, featuring a ball joint and a directional hinge.

▼The waist rotates. Legs can kick forward and sideways over 90 degrees, and backward about 60 degrees. Thighs rotate horizontally. Knees have two ratcheted joints, bending nearly 180 degrees with a satisfying click. Feet can tilt side-to-side, rotate slightly, and the toes can point downward. This Optimus Prime boasts excellent articulation, surpassing most transformable figures on the market—hard to find fault with.

▼Optimus Prime comes with the classic large black blaster and Energon-axe. The blaster is instantly recognizable and features a black paint finish. It attaches to the hand via a slot in the handle.

▼The Energon-axe requires the round structure to be disassembled before attaching. On my unit, the slot between the blade and round part is extremely tight, making it impossible to fully connect. As a result, the round structure can’t close completely around the hand. You may need to sand it down for better fitment.

▼The transformation isn’t difficult—after going through it once, you’ll basically remember the steps. Joint tolerances are well balanced—not too tight or loose. Except for slightly loose side mirrors and a somewhat tricky rear section, the process is smooth.
In vehicle mode, Optimus Prime looks just as solid. The windshield wipers are sculpted, the round headlights are chrome, and the small lower headlights are made of clear plastic. However, the left mirror is loose and won’t stand properly—hopefully this will be improved in future runs.

▼The cockpit doors can open, though the interior has no detailing. The rear section is a bit more cluttered than the front. The blue panels that form the legs have irregular shapes. Fortunately, there are no hollow gaps behind the cockpit.

▼Magic Square 2.0 Optimus Prime is a classic mold with a heroic appearance, high accuracy, and incredible articulation. The premium animation-style paint job closely replicates the G1 cartoon. The joint tolerances are well-tuned, handling feels great, and transformation is easy. The vehicle mode is slightly busy at the rear but still competitive compared to other toys at the same scale. If the manufacturer improves some minor craftsmanship details, there’s little left to complain about. If you missed out on earlier versions of the Magic Square 2.0 Optimus Prime, this version is an easy recommendation—it also fixes many of the issues found in previous releases.
