MPG17 is already the fourth-generation Optimus Prime in the MP line, yet its overall design style has essentially returned to that of the first and second generations, MP01 and MP10. For collectors who have been eagerly hoping for a reissue of MP44 and have driven its price to today’s astonishing heights, this is hardly good news. It likely means that TakaraTomy has hit a wall and decided to turn back, which is a very clear negation of the overall MP3.0 direction that emphasized screen accuracy, articulation, and complex transformations. If that is the case, the chances of an MP44 reissue can be said to be extremely slim.
▼In addition, there is another fact: since the release of MP44, the constantly repainted MP10 has also been cut off completely. Back then, after the four “sneaker” MP10 versions released the DC and ASL editions, there was no further follow-up.
![Takara Tomy Masterpiece red blue Optimus Prime robot figure Takara Tomy Masterpiece red blue Optimus Prime robot figure]()
▼Returning to the toy itself, this is a very “un-MP-like” MPG release. There are extensive omissions and careless handling in the details, which run completely counter to the consistent style of the main MP line. If one really has to make a comparison, it actually feels more like the bunny-eared MPM12 Optimus Prime. Details that could have been hidden with just two additional folds received no further optimization at all, and were simply presented plainly to collectors, conveniently leaving plenty of room for accessory manufacturers like DNA to make money.
![Transformers MPG-17 Optimus Prime in robot form displayed Transformers MPG-17 Optimus Prime in robot form displayed]()
▼The most obvious example is the excess plastic panels on Optimus Prime’s shoulders. One look makes it clear that an extra fold could have hidden them—but no, I refuse.

▼There are many other similar detail omissions on MPG17. For example, even thumb articulation has been completely removed, showing that the manufacturer’s cost calculations have been refined down to every single joint and part.
![Transformers Masterpiece generation robot figure shown Transformers Masterpiece generation robot figure shown]()
▼The result of this is an extremely smooth and straightforward transformation. Transforming the entire toy once doesn’t even take ten minutes, which in the year 2026 is already enough to move one to tears. In particular, the transformation of the lower body can be called the simplest among all MP, MPM, MPG, and MPMN releases.

▼At the same time, articulation remains at an exceptionally high level, and when combined with the rich selection of accessories, it makes the toy very fun to handle. It is a rare breath of fresh air among MP-scale figures in recent years.

▼However, the noble bloodline inherited from MP01 is not applied in the right way. The overly large ratchet spacing in the hip joints makes it difficult for MPG17 to achieve a reasonable standing pose: either the legs are pressed tightly together in a stiff, zombie-like stance, or they are spread too far apart and look completely lacking in presence. This is exactly the same problem that existed with MP01.

▼Interestingly, this very simple transformation instead leads to an improvement in the vehicle mode. Aside from the unsightly feet that are not hidden at all, the thickness of the truck and its overall solidity are actually the best among the four generations of Optimus Prime.

▼Overall, MPG17 Optimus Prime is a toy that sits between traditional MP releases and the Classics line. It preserves the most basic sense of dignity expected from an MP figure, and on that foundation performs heavy subtraction, cutting away all parts and joints that are not strictly necessary. This saves costs while giving collectors the smoothest transformation experience possible. How one views this kind of trade-off is, of course, a matter of personal opinion. At least for me, MPG17 is the best MPG to date, and when placed within the entire MP series, it stands as a solidly middle-of-the-road release.
